Volunteer Buddy Expectations
Adults with Special Needs Baseball Program
Thank you for volunteering to be a buddy! Your role is to support, encourage, and help ensure our players have a safe, fun, and successful experience on the field.
Always communicate with the parents any issues that happen during the game so we can address them. It can be something small that helps you care for the player on the field and during game play.
Please also ensure the players always have their initials in their hats and on gloves.
The markers are always at the announcer table or in equipment bags.
During the Game
-
Help players stay focused:
Some players may become distracted or wander mentally. Gentle reminders, cheering, and pointing out what’s happening in the game help keep them engaged and on track. -
Outfield support and safety:
Stand in the outfield with a glove to help block or stop fly balls that could accidentally hurt a player. -
Encourage participation:
Cheer players on to:-
Run for the ball
-
Pass or throw the ball to another player
-
Throw the ball to the coach if needed
-
-
Batting assistance:
When a player is at bat, they may need:-
Help holding the bat
-
Physical guidance or verbal coaching on how to swing and hit
-
Dugout Support
-
Hydration and cooling down:
Encourage players to drink water regularly, especially during hot weather, to stay hydrated and safe. -
Positive encouragement:
Keep spirits high with cheering, praise, and reassurance while players wait their turn.
Sportsmanship
-
Team hi-five:
Have the players gather in a line to participate in a team hi-five with the opposing team to promote good sportsmanship and respect.
End of the Game
-
Game ball celebration:
At the end of each game, a game ball is awarded to a different player. Volunteers help make this a special and exciting moment. -
Post-game snacks:
Parents provide snacks for players to enjoy after the game. Volunteers ensure each player receives a snack and drink. Any leftover snacks are taken to the concession building and placed on the snack table. -
Cleanup and equipment care:
Volunteers assist with:-
Cleaning out the dugout
-
Putting away equipment
-
Returning all items to the storage shed
-
We value the use of city property and work together to ensure everything is left in the same condition as when we arrived.
